Gotta Catch'em All... except you don't have to, not really (#IWSG June 2019)

I'll keep today's post short.

Last month I kinda went on a rant. Life was stressful and I was a bit freaked out. I threatened to quit writing altogether, which I know is not ever going to actually happen, unless I'm somehow struck blind and deaf and lose both my hands in some sort of freak accident. But it's hard sometimes.

So the last month I have been writing, quietly, not making a big deal about it. I finally put aside the manuscript that I've been struggling with for almost 9 months and started writing something new and fun, and I've written something like 20,000 words in the last month. No pressure, no real plan, just playing around. After putting it aside, I also FINALLY thought about how to fix the previous story, so maybe I'll go back to that one eventually, too.

My wife is doing much better. Life has settled into a bit of smoother routine. The weather's nicer so I'm getting out to jog more often. All in all, things are looking up, and I'm (cautiously) optimistic. Until the next crisis brings it all crashing back down, anyway.

Also, I've been playing a lot of Pokemon GO. Like A LOT of Pokemon GO.

Maybe it's these cute little guys that's been making me feel better.

JUNE QUESTION:
Of all the genres you read and write, which is your favorite to write in and why?

I'm sure we've answer this one before, but without a doubt my favourite genre to both read and write is humour. There's enough drama and darkness in the real world, so I really seek out entertainment that makes me chuckle.

The best part of humour is that it's a very broad "genre." You can add humour to just about anything - fantasy, mystery, romance, self-help, college applications, grocery lists, police statements, religious texts, prehistoric cave drawings - and it only makes it better. Anything worth doing is worth not taking seriously, so let yourself enjoy life and have a laugh (or two).

STRANGELY FUNNY VI IS OUT IN PAPERBACK

Speaking of mixing genres and having a good laugh, make sure you check out Strangely Funny VI, now available in paperback (as well as for Kindle). It features my story, "Eyewear of the Damned." It will be horrify and amuse you.

We do need the humor.
Good to hear your wife is doing better. And that you are writing again. Knew you couldn't quit.

I'm glad things have shown some improvement. Sometimes you need to switch gears and take the pressure off, which it sounds like you're doing.

I play Pokemon Go too, on behalf of my son. My daughter has been a long-standing Pokemon fan, so we make it a point to go out every Community Day and meet up with friends. We're team Mystic. How about you?

I completely agree! We need more humor and happy endings in our novels to counteract the negativity humans create in daily living. Books show us the best of humanity when media often shows us only the worst. Keep writing the best!

I started playing on behalf of my son, but to be honest it's more for me. :-)

We're team Instinct - my son chose it because it was the only team with a boy leader, but I think we're going to change to team Mystic once we get enough coins, because all of our family members (father-in-law, uncle, cousins, etc) are all blue. It sucks doing a raid and then afterward having to fight over who's going to take control of the gym.

I've had a story I've set aside as well because I was stumped on the words needed to write what I wanted to happen.

I'm glad to hear the dust is settling for you. I agree--funny makes every story sweeter.

Glad things have settled down for you. And awesome that you're in the flow with your new project. I admire writers who can write humor.

I'm not great at happy endings. Comedy, sure, but usually my endings are "bittersweet" at best. :-/

Oh, I've written words. They're just all the wrong ones. :-(

So many people take themselves too seriously. A little humour makes it go down easier.

Thank you. I didn't say I write it well, mind you, but I do what I can.

I love your humor, C.D.! Good idea to take a break from a difficult manuscript and start something new. I did that in 2013 and finished a trilogy in another genre before I returned to the difficult manuscript, which I eventually published.

Glad to hear your wife is doing better, and that life in general has calmed tf down! And congrats on the fun new project! Those are the best, aren't they? They spark the creativity and everything becomes fun and pressure-free because you're writing for the love of it. Yay! So happy for you!

Glad to hear things have settled down. I went through a serious health scare with hubs in March. And you know what? Like you, finding time to write just wasn't on the top of my list of things to do. Once I got hubs settled, family back to their respective homes, and contractors for a handicapped bathroom hired, I sat down and went back to it. You're on exactly the right track. Enjoy your writing. We need a whole lot more humor and lightness in this world.

As cliched as it may be, laughter IS the best medicine, so I'm all for a dose of humour - whenever and wherever!

I am seriously slow coming around to some of these IWSG posts, but I'm really glad to hear your wife is doing better, and that writing is coming back to you (gives me hope for myself).
