Where do we go from here?

So I'm almost finished the second draft of my book. I really should have been done long ago (especially since I wrote the first draft oh, about 7 years ago) but life happens. The question of course is...

...now what?

I would love to get a real editor to go through it but I certainly can't afford one right now. Do I solicit some beta readers to go through it and give me feedback? I'm not thrilled at that idea simply because I don't think it's right to expect someone to give me feedback on my work when I may not have the time and ability to do the same in return.

I've had some family read it but haven't gotten much feedback. I suspect the story makes them uncomfortable for reasons I won't get into here.

Do I just throw it out into the wild and see what happens? I know it can always use more work, but on the other hand when is it enough? My biggest fear is over the length. It's about 40,000 words, I guess you would call it a long novella. It could be fleshed out and expanded and lengthened, but I really question whether it needs to be. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. It moves along at a good clip. I don't want to add additional characters, extraneous narration or side stories just for the sake of padding the length. It is what it is.

I'm not really looking for answers, I'm just wondering out loud. But hey, if anyone has any advice, it would always be appreciated.
